Everyone dropped but one Pokerparty player. He called me to the river, when he saw my hand he said in a nasty voice, "You're some actor pal, real cute." I couldn't resist telling him to stop complaining because he was the only one at the whole table who bought my terrible performance. Please don't send me a pile of e-mail telling me I played it wrong.
Knowing that you must be patient is one thing, having the mental discipline to maintain that patience for long periods of days and months can be difficult. The test will come when you have waited for what seems like forever to get a good Pokerparty hand, let's say pocket Aces. To make a long story short, you flop a set and get rivered by a guy playing 2/5 off-suit, who makes a straight.
We land at Newark, and we have to change planes get new seat assignments and store our carry on luggage again. One and a half hours or so later, we are out on the tarmac once more. I take a look out the window and see lots of flashing lights and what looked like Jeeps or fire trucks. The pilot comes on says "Due to debris on the runway, all runways but one are closed to take offs and landings. We will be proceeding to that open runway".
I mean showing off a large bankroll or other indication that you have a huge bankroll in relationship to the level you are playing.
I have seen many instances of Pokerparty players who carried over the check in the dark mentality from home games to casino games, and end up continuously losing a bet because they did complete their hand and they never took a peek at it. To do it in a pot limit game you have to have a death wish. I have heard more "Damn I shoulda looked before I checked" than I ever heard "Sure glad I didn't look before I checked."
Preparation for the hunt was my advantage over my Pokerparty prey. If it were luck that decided whether the outcome of the hunt was successful, it would be because luck had been on the animal's side that day. The final step in any hunt is the win, victory, kill, or whatever you wish to call it. Sometimes, the best laid plans that I could devise ended in failure.
For example in craps, just ask any craps player who is holding cold dice. These things are can surely seem real, and just maybe changing the deal in poker is equal to changing the dice in craps, and praying for a miracle. Of course asking for a new deck might be useful against superstitious Pokerparty opponents, who may be running good with the existing deck.
After all, if you or your opponents will not be playing Pokerparty in an hour, why sacrifice any short-term profit? Varying your play may also become important if you don't have choices for where to play. You might have a weekly home game with some solid players or only one casino in a 150-mile radius. If you are frequently returning to see the same group of players, then projecting a mottled image becomes valuable.
